How to use this table

What you see below is a breakdown of keys most-often used in songs. Obviously, this table does not cover any of the flat-major scales (e.g. Bb, Eb, Ab, etc.). This should be helpful for those trying to transpose from one key to another.

The top row represents the step in the scale. The left-most step is the first step and also refers to the key. To use this table, find what key the song you want to transpose is in. Then find the key you want the song to be in. One-by-one, you will substitute the chords from one key to its matching chord in another key.

This table does not show accidentals. For that, you'll need to find yourself a circle of fifths table.

I II III IV V VI VII
C D E F G A B
D E F# G A B C#
E F# G# A B C# D#
F G A Bb C D E
G A B C D E F#
A B C# D E F# G#
B C# D# E F# G# A#

Example:

You have a song that is in the key of E:

Marry had a Little Lamb

E
Mary had a little lamb
Bsus
Little lamb
A2
Little lamb
E
Mary had a little lamb
    A2 Bsus E
Her fleece was white as snow.

(I don't know if the chords are even right in this. But it makes for a good example.)

You don't like how this sounds in E so you decide to turn it into G. Go to the table and find the E line, which happens to be the fourth row down from the top (third, if you count from C). Now, find the G line (6th from top). You now replace the E chord in the song with a G chord.

You may be asking, "What about A2 and Bsus? What if there is a C#m7?"

The song tabber took some liberties when putting the tabs in. Often this is done to make playing easier without the song sounding significantly different. In these cases, you will have to make your best judgement as to which chords to play. However, to use this table, simply drop any of the extra notations and find it's equivalent chord in the key you wish you use. For A2, you would find A, and learn that it is a C chord in the key of G.

Continue doing this until you have completed changing the key to the song. In this example, your song should now look like this:

Marry had a Little Lamb

G
Mary had a little lamb
Dsus
Little lamb
C2
Little lamb
G
Mary had a little lamb
    C2 Dsus G
Her fleece was white as snow.

This is, by no means, an exhaustive explanation of chords and music theory. However, it is meant to give you some hints on how chords work as it pertains to the guitar. For more information about chord theory and music theory, please consult your nearest music major or google.
