This article explains the basic concept of tuning a 6-string Guitar to a standard eGBDAE tuning.
The tuning is made by note comparison of an open string to the 5th freted string below it, except of the 3rd (D) string which is compared to the 2nd string (G) freted in 4th fret.
E (6th string, thickest),open string = A(5th string) 5th fret
A (5th string),open string = D(4th string) 5th fret
D (4th string),open string = B(3rd string) 5th fret
B (3rd string),open string = G(2nd string) 4th fret
G (2nd string),open string = E(1st string, thinest) 5th fret
By now all the strings should be relativly tuned to the 6th E string, but what about tunning the 6tyh string?
to get the 6th E (thickest bass) string tuned you can simply tune from another guitar, get a pitchpipe which is also good for ear training or from a digital tuner or a software tuner. If you have a digital it should be calibrated to 440Hz which is concert pitch.
