play the second note (watch him in concert!)

I imagine, though, that if you needed to play it in a key that
didn't coincide with open strings (as the band often does during
those crazy Jam > Tweezer Reprise deals), this would be a better
choice since you can play it with a barre, thus in any key:  here
is Tweezer Reprise in Eb (barre on fret 6):

I figured out a way to "simulate" the band's playing the background part on the guitar.
Use lots of distortion :), and keep the D string ringing the whole time
