Soundtracks

I tried creating a category called Soundtracks that would go on the Categories page so that when a page is created with the category it would go in there, but I'm having problems and don't know how to fix it. It also has a self linking subgroup page for some reason. I think the Juno Soundtrack is the only one so far. Any help would be much appreciated. JeremyLatimer 17:00, 20 June 2008 (CDT)

Artist Header

I propose that the Artist Header should be expanded upon by creating an Artist Info Box like what is used on WikiPedia, with related acts, website links, and the like. The artist influence link could go in there, along with the link to WikiPedia. This would facilitate navigation to more artist pages. Links to the artists' homepage and/or merch pages could be used to increase funding for the site if the site is able to track clickthrough rates, which shouldn't be too difficult. Opinions? Instrumentation

Is there a way to add instruments to that category listing so that I can make an internal link instead of an external link for a trumpet tab (and any other instrument parts that will undoubtedly get added)? Also, is there a way to remove the links for Bass and Drums that automatically appear next to a song title when it is created? It would be nice if there was a way to choose which instrument parts appeared there, based on what is actually in the song so that users could look though and notice "oh, hey, this song needs a banjo part tabbed out" and the like.

Thanks --JeremyLatimer 20:50, 11 April 2008 (CDT)

The Bass and Drum links are in the subpage template, but you can work around them by writing the link in full rather than using the template. This already has to be done if, for example, a song title has characters in it that can't appear in a page title - the proper song title should be displayed in the link, but it has to link to a page with a valid title. For an example, see Radiohead - "2+2=5" is displayed as the link text, linking to a page titled 2 plus 2 equals 5. Take a look at the code for that, you should be able to adapt it to show any instruments you want where Bass and Drums usually go. Hope that helps...! Raelthelamb 06:02, 12 April 2008 (CDT)
Thanks for the help with the links! I got that all figured out. Was there a way for users to edit the Instrumentation Category page that lists Guitar, Piano, Two Guitars, etc or is that only admins? And same with the main page in the blue "Welcome To TabWiki" box, and more importantly, in the blue Song Template box that gets put at the top of a tab. I tried messing around with the song template code, but wasn't able to get it to work right. I was going to add Trumpet, Trombone, and Banjo, but couldn't. I think that if these categories are more readily available/able to be added, people will be more willing to add more and make this site much more useful than most tab sites that only cater to guitar.--JeremyLatimer 22:37, 13 April 2008 (CDT)
No problem! For the instrument category page, add, for example, to the bottom of the tab. This will throw up a red link when saved - click that to add a new page and type:

and it'll be added to the instrumentation category page. As for the Main Page, it is locked for edits, although if anyone with edit privileges is reading, a link to the top level instrument category would be quite nice. The Song Template is also locked, but again you should be able to work around it - see Iron & Wine/Jezebel. Ideally, the song template should be able to accept any number of instruments to be displayed (maybe by searching under pages beginning Artist/Song?) but that's beyond my capabilities with the wiki code, if it's even possible.Raelthelamb 06:39, 14 April 2008 (CDT)

Alphabetization

While adding new artists to the site, it's struck me that the standard for alphabetizing solo artists isn't in line with general conventions. For example, I would look for David Bowie under B, not D as we have him. So I've come up with a new standard which I think we should adopt, and would be grateful for comments.

1. Dave Matthews --> Matthews, Dave
2. The Jimi Hendrix Experience --> Jimi Hendrix Experience, The
3. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers --> Petty, Tom & The Heartbreakers
4. John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess --> Petrucci, John & Rudess, Jordan

5. A Perfect Circle --> Perfect Circle, A (not for solo artists, just think that A should be treated the same way as The).

I think that covers all of the possibilities. The only immediate downside I can see is that Jimi Hendrix would be under H, while the Experience would be under J, and the same for cases like Devin Townsend and The Devin Townsend Band. It's just a little cumbersome to have "Hendrix, Jimi Experience, The" which looks ridiculous.

NOTE: This would work the same way as the current system for artists with "The" at the front of their name - the "sorted" name is only displayed for the link on the letter pages, and the actual name of the page is unchanged.

If I get enough consent, I'll start rearranging the alphabet pages, while the site is still small enough to make this plausible.

How long do you think this would take and I say if you want to rearange it I say go ahead and if you need help i'm sure everybody would be willing to help out. Oysterguitarist 23:37, 23 Jul 2007 (UTC)

good idea. --Joshcabrera 01:41, 24 Jul 2007 (UTC)

This is a subject that I had given some thought to awhile back. I was never totally happy with the previous system (which is probably documented somewhere on this wiki) and I realized that the artists were not always alphabetized properly anyway. I mostly support this plan. I believe that this is technically in line with the officially stated method -- except one thing. Even though "Dave Matthews" would be alphabetized as "Matthews, Dave", in the current system it should still be spelled out as "Dave Matthews". See what I mean? So it would occupy the "Matthews, Dave" line, but still have the link and page titled as "Dave Matthews". I personally wouldn't mind continuing this way. Somehow I feel uncomfortable changing the actual page titles to have commas in them. I mean if the band is named "A Perfect Circle", then it feels wrong to me to name the actualy page "Perfect Circle, A" regardless of how it is alphabetized. Any comments? -RockyRaccoon 02:41, 24 Jul 2007 (UTC)

Yes - I agree about page titles. My proposal is simply to change the appearance and position of the links, not the actual titles of the pages. In other words, it works the same way as "The" at the moment - The Moody Blues are listed on the "M" page as "Moody Blues, The", but the link refers to a page titled "The Moody Blues". The main reason I think it should be displayed in the alphebetized form in the link is because it makes it much quicker and easier to check if an artist has been alphebetized wrongly if you only have to read the first few letters - and this is how "The" is dealt with at the moment. Thinking about it, I don't think I've seen an official method stated anywhere, but the overwhelming number of artists were sorted by first name, so I probably assumed that's what it was supposed to be like. I'm going to start having a go at this now then, it shouldn't take too long at the moment, I suspect there are 1000 artists at most listed so far, and a lot of them will be fine. Just thought I'd better bring it up now before the site gets really big and it becomes a ridiculous task...

Good job! Oysterguitarist 01:15, 29 Jul 2007 (UTC)

Thanks! However, I've just stumbled across the help page relating to this, and there are some minor changes necessary. As RockyRaccoon said above, the artist should be displayed on the alphabet page as in the page title (so Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles etc. The "sort name" should be used for categorisation only. I'm not so sure that this is the right way to go though, as it's more difficult to proof read. Interested to see what people think about this one. If anyone wants a page with the artists displayed as in the page titles, the alphabetized categories work like this.

Categories

I should be putting and on tabs? cause I am categorizing the uncategorized pages. Oysterguitarist 01:15, 29 Jul 2007 (UTC)

What's happening?

The bar with the artist page and help links in it has moved to the bottom of the Main Page, and subheadings don't seem to be working. What's happening?

Raelthelamb 15:08, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

I think we upgraded the MediaWiki software Oysterguitarist 15:09, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Wow, quick reply! I did wonder about the new links on the left... I guess the bugs are being ironed out as we speak then. If things are still weird in a few days I'll complain some more! Raelthelamb 15:16, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
Exactly - update in progress and almost done. AFAIK, the only left to fix is the menu on the left. Everything else should pretty much be in place. We upgraded from 1.4.2 to 1.6.9 (the highest we can go on our current version of PHP). I might upgrade PHP soon to support even newer versions, but this should help for now.
And the subheadings - take a look: Marillion Raelthelamb 15:24, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
It appears that you can't do that anymore, look at how I fixed it and do that from now on. Oysterguitarist 15:44, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
OK, cool. The pictures actually fit a bit better like that anyway, it looks like it might remove the problem of having to add extra line breaks to albums with a small number of songs on, so that the formatting of the next section doesn't get messed up because the picture is comes down further than the text! (Or maybe not...)
Yep, just need to have sub-headings on their own line now. Also, I just added a CAPTCHA whenever someone tries to add a link. It's an older version of it (for now), but should help combat spam a good bit.
How's it work? Oysterguitarist 16:24, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
When a user edits a page and inserts a link, it comes back to that page and asks a simple (random) math question (like "what is 18+3"). When they answer that correctly and submit the page again, the change goes through. It's very similar to how it's done on WikiPedia. --Mickey 17:58, 9 September 2007 (UTC)
ok. Oysterguitarist 18:05, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

Uploads

According to Special:Upload, uploading has been disabled. Was this just a mistake when the software was upgraded, or is this an intentional decision? Raelthelamb 15:11, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

I think, this happened when we upgraded sofware, Mickey should be able to enable uploads. Oysterguitarist 19:39, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
Yep, sorry about that. It should work now. --Mickey 10:46, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Cheers. Destination filename as well now, classy! Raelthelamb 12:23, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

request

I have noticed that the request template is being used mostly by anon users to request a song that is not here. I think that this wastes pages and if people come here and they see that the link is blue they expect a tab when actually get a message saying some one requests it. I was thinking we could limit requests to people who have an account to prevent this problem. What do you think? Oysterguitarist 14:17, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

I think we should definately do something about the blue links - maybe doing a list for requests rather than a template would be better - although harder to maintain. Unless it's possible to do anything really fancy with the Wiki software to get a page that only contains the request template to show up as a red link? Raelthelamb 21:20, 1 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, somebody can make a list and I'll protect it so only registered users can edit it. This will take care of the blue links. Oysterguitarist 22:49, 1 October 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I've gone ahead and made the page. Oysterguitarist 21:28, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Lately I have been working on what you see when you look at the recent changes, let me know if you have any suggests, please put them here, thanks. Oysterguitarist 14:18, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

top100guitarsites.com

I have used the site notice to link top100guitarsites.com, this should put that on every page, I have done this because I noticed this so I figure that we get about 300 uniques a day and if some of the visitors go to top100guitarist.com it will raise are ranking in the list getting us more visitors and hopefully more users, increasing are popularity. Comments are questions? Oysterguitarist 17:00, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Seems like this shouldn't be going on a community based wiki site. It makes it look like TabWiki will display a bunch of pop-ups as you browse or something. It makes the site look gimmicky!

Vandalism

Recently we have been receiving lots of vandalism from an IP range, I can block the range but we need to have range blocks enabled, so if Mickey could enable range blocks I will do a range block to stop the vandalism from that range. Oysterguitarist 17:28, 12 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay. It's there now. --Mickey 18:10, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Are you sure, when I go to block the range 85.0.0.0/8 for one week I get an error. Oysterguitarist 14:08, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Support Forums

Is there a reason I get an error when I click the "Support Forums" link on the left? --TheCoffinRobber 19:35, 27 April 2008 (CDT)

Guitar Hero

I was wondering if we could capitalize on the release of the upcoming GH games (Aerosmith, DS, and 4) and start making sure we have those tabs as well as maybe start a "Featured Hero Track" (or something similar) on the front page. I know that GH helped me get into playing, and it'd be great if the music is readily for other beginners who don't want to sift through hundreds of songs they don't know.

I think this could be useful for some people, so if you go ahead and get it going the admins might add the link to the main page. In the meantime you can create a new category called Guitar Hero and put it at the bottom of songs that are in the games that are already tabbed out. If you look in the Instrumentation section of this talk page there's some advice on how to create a new category. If you want to take it one step further, you could then create a collaboration to post tabs for songs from the games. Good luck. --JeremyLatimer 16:42, 3 June 2008
I think would be a good section on the main page that points to a category, I could add it if you like. Oysterguitarist 12:05, 5 June 2008 (CDT)

Links on artist pages

Why do all songs have links to the bass and drums tabs, regardless of whether the song actually has any bass or drums? It looks terrible. I propose we resolve to only put in those links if the tab exists, so we don't see ridiculous amounts of red links. This would involve changing the template. --Kerem 12:19, 28 June 2008 (CDT)

Additional information

Something that could make this site cool would be having additional information about artists, albums or songs. Like what if you wanted to cover a Beatles song, looked it up on here and found out that George Harrison recorded his part backwards? What if you could even click on a link that took you to a page on that technique and the various people who have used it? --Kerem 12:19, 28 June 2008 (CDT)
