Tuning

Drop-D Tuning is, from low to high, D A D G B E. The only difference from Standard Tuning is the low D string, hence the name "Drop D".

Common Chord Shapes

Also see Chords.

Drop-D shares many chord shapes with Standard Tuning.

One common reason that Drop D is used is that "power chords" can be played with only one finger.

  • E5: 222xxx
  • D5: 000xxx
  • A5: 777xxx

Drop D also makes various other power-chord variations possible.

  • Asus2: 779xxx
  • Gsus2: 557xxx
  • Fm: 336xxx
  • Gm: 558xxx
  • F5: 3335xx (power chord with added octave of fifth)
  • G5: 5557xx

Also, D major can be played as 000232.

Try these D chords as well!

  • 0 0 0 7 10 10
  • 0 0 0 2 3 5 = 0 0 0 14 15 17 I believe this is a D/A
  • 0 5 7 7 6 5 minor
  • 0 5 4 2 3 x
  • 0 0 12 11 10 x

One can also play what would be a barred chord in standard tuning like this:

  • G: 5 5 5 4 3 3 - in standard : 3 5 5 4 3 3
  • E: 2 2 2 1 0 0 - in standard : 0 2 2 1 0 0
  • B: 9 9 9 8 7 7 - in standard : 7 9 9 8 7 7

use your ring finger for top 3 strings, middle for 'g' string and pointer to bar the rest. Kinda awkward at first, but once perfected you can see how versatile dropped tuning can be.

One can also add another root octave like the F5 power chord with added octave of fifth listed above:

  • 3 3 3 5 6 x same as
  • 3 3 3 x 1 1
